Vizhinjam Lighthouse

The Iconic Beacon of Kovalam

Standing proudly above the rocky coastline of Kovalam, the Vizhinjam Lighthouse, popularly known as the Kovalam Lighthouse, is one of the most recognised landmarks of Kerala's southern coast. Located near the historic fishing harbour of Vizhinjam, approximately 16 kilometres from Thiruvananthapuram, the lighthouse offers breathtaking panoramic views of Lighthouse Beach, the Arabian Sea, and the picturesque coastline that has made Kovalam famous across the world.

Vizhinjam itself has a rich maritime heritage. During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, it flourished as an important trading port, welcoming vessels engaged in regional and international commerce. While there is no recorded evidence of a lighted beacon during that era, navigational aids such as day-mark beacons and flag masts are believed to have guided ships safely into the harbour.

Following the decline of the port towards the end of the nineteenth century, maritime navigation in the region continued to evolve. A lighted beacon was established at nearby Kolachal in 1925, and a day-mark beacon was later installed at Vizhinjam in 1960. Recognising the growing importance of the coastline, the construction of a major lighthouse was undertaken and completed in 1972. The lighthouse was commissioned into service on 20 May 1972, equipped with navigational technology supplied by M/s BBT, Paris. In 2003, its original incandescent lighting system was upgraded with a modern 230V 450W metal halide lamp and a direct-drive mechanism.

Today, the striking red-and-white tower has become a symbol of Kovalam. Visitors can climb to the observation gallery and enjoy spectacular views of the crescent-shaped beaches, fishing boats, coconut groves, and endless blue waters of the Arabian Sea. Particularly enchanting during sunrise and sunset, the lighthouse offers one of the most memorable viewpoints in Kerala.

For guests of Sagara Beach Resort, the Vizhinjam Lighthouse is not only a historic navigational beacon but also a gateway to experiencing the beauty, heritage, and maritime spirit of Kerala's celebrated coastline.
