Rejuvenation

Restoring Vitality Through Rasayana Therapies

Rejuvenation in Ayurveda is guided by the principle of rasayana, a branch of therapy dedicated to restoring strength, vitality and resilience. Through specialised herbal preparations and external applications of medicated oils and extracts, these therapies aim to revitalise the body, enhance immunity, and promote graceful ageing.

Rejuvenation programmes are often sought by individuals experiencing lifestyle-related conditions, fatigue, stress, joint discomfort, or reduced vitality. Each therapy is prescribed according to individual constitution and condition, with duration varying as per medical assessment.

Below are some of the classical rejuvenation therapies practised in Kerala’s Ayurvedic tradition.

Pizhichil

Pizhichil

A deeply soothing therapy often recommended for rheumatic conditions, paralytic states, and nervous weakness. Warm herbal oils are gently poured and massaged over the body by trained therapists in synchronised movements. Sessions typically last between 60 and 90 minutes and the course of treatment may extend from 7 to 21 days depending on individual needs.

Kizhi

Kizhi

Also known as herbal bolus therapy, this treatment involves the application of heated muslin pouches filled with medicinal herbs to the whole body or specific areas. It is traditionally recommended for joint pain, muscular stiffness, spondylosis, and certain metabolic conditions. A typical session lasts 60 to 90 minutes, usually prescribed for about 14 days.

Njavarakizhi

Njavarakizhi

A variation of Kizhi, this therapy uses boluses filled with njavara rice cooked in herbal decoctions and milk. It is considered nourishing and strengthening, particularly beneficial in conditions of weakness and muscle wasting.

Dhara

Dhara

Dhara is a calming therapy in which medicated liquids are poured in a continuous, gentle stream over the forehead. The patient reclines comfortably while the fluid flows from a traditional vessel positioned at a measured height. Oils, herbal decoctions, milk, or tender coconut water may be used depending on the condition. Dhara is commonly recommended for insomnia, stress-related conditions, and certain neurological or skin disorders. The duration of treatment typically ranges from 7 to 21 days.

Vasthi

Vasthi

Vasthi is regarded as one of the principal therapies in Ayurveda, particularly for disorders associated with vata imbalance. Medicated oils or herbal preparations are administered rectally under strict supervision. It is traditionally used in conditions such as arthritis, paralysis, and chronic constipation. The course may vary between 5 and 25 days depending on medical evaluation.

Sirovasthi

Sirovasthi

In this therapy, warm medicated oil is retained on the head within a specially fitted cap for a prescribed period, usually between 15 and 60 minutes. It is often recommended for certain neurological conditions, facial paralysis, chronic headaches, and dryness-related disorders.

Udvarthanam

Udvarthanam

A stimulating therapy involving the application and massage of herbal powders over the body. It is commonly advised for obesity, sluggish metabolism, and certain rheumatic conditions. The course may extend from 14 to 28 days as required.

Abhyangam

Abhyangam

A traditional full-body oil massage performed with medicated oils selected according to the individual’s constitution. It is generally recommended for promoting circulation, relieving fatigue, and supporting metabolic balance. Sessions usually last around 45 minutes and may be prescribed for approximately two weeks.

Nasyam

Nasyam

In Nasyam, medicated oils or herbal juices are administered through the nasal passages. This therapy is traditionally used for headaches, sinus conditions, certain neurological disorders, and stress-related ailments. The duration typically ranges from 7 to 14 days.

Kativasthi

Kativasthi

In Kativasthi, warm medicated oil is retained over the lower back within a boundary created using herbal paste. The therapy usually lasts 45 to 60 minutes and is commonly recommended for lower back pain and spinal disorders.

Urovasthi

Urovasthi

Similar in method to Kativasthi, this treatment retains medicated oil over the chest region. It is traditionally advised for respiratory conditions, muscular chest discomfort, and certain cardiac-related imbalances as per medical assessment.

Ksheeradhoomam

Ksheeradhoomam

Also known as milk fomentation therapy, this treatment involves the application of medicated cow’s milk vapours to specific areas. It is often recommended for facial paralysis, speech-related disorders, and certain neurological conditions.
